Even if you have organised a professional removals firm like a man and a van or Taxi Newcastle to shift all your household goods you will still have to do a lot of organising and packing. It makes a lot of sense to start early with regards to packing, especially with all those things that are not so essential. There’s nothing wrong with starting your packing several weeks before the actual move. As the date gets closer then all the more important or larger and bulkier items can be packed.
One good tip to remember when doing your packing is to keep all your most important or legal documents, including any banking and insurance documents quite separate from your general household items. If these happen to go missing in transit, and of course this is quite unlikely to happen, it would be incredibly inconvenient to have all your documents go missing as well, just when you need them the most!
Your removals company will have all the essential packing items available for sale, or you will also find that they are easily available elsewhere. It’s worth collecting suitable sized cardboard boxes well before you need them, though. In addition to cardboard, you will need bubble wrap, tape, marking pens and paper. Newspaper is often commonly used for packing, but is best avoided as it tends to leave black stains on anything that is wrapped up inside.
When packing, it is normal to have different methods of packing for different sorts of items. The most fragile items will be well wrapped in bubble wrap or something similar and packed in boxes with other fragile items as the more protective packing material in the box the better.
As you will no doubt use a lot of cardboard boxes, the sooner you start collecting these the better as already mentioned. When looking around for spare boxes, make sure you collect an assortment of sizes and shapes. Heavier materials that are not too big should be packed in small to medium sized boxes, while lighter and more bulky items can be packed in larger boxes. If you have the original packing boxes stored somewhere, then these are the best solution for carrying expensive electrical or electronic items such as televisions and computers.
Make sure that when you have filled each box that you secure the box with packing ape all around and if there are spaces left inside any of the boxes that you fill the space with scrunched up paper or rags or any other soft material – spare cushions and pillows might come in useful here – to prevent items from moving around inside the boxes.
Finally, keep an inventory of what is in each box and make sure that the inventory is passed over to the removals company when they come to collect your household goods. The inventory might also be needed for any insurance claim if that becomes necessary. To ensure that the inventory is complete, every box should be carefully labelled.
All boxes containing fragile items should be clearly labelled accordingly on the outside, as should any boxes that need to be kept in a certain position and cannot be tipped upside down. A coding system could be used when labeling to indicate what is inside and this will help when you have arrived in your new home and the boxes have to be positioned and opened in the place where all the packed goods are required.
